A Teacher's Story Versus What Your Sound Session Involves

Practitioner profiles can be inspiring, but they cannot tell you how your session will feel. Here is what to ask and which limits you are free to set.

Profiles of sound practitioners can be inspiring to read. Years of travel, apprenticeships with teachers in faraway places and moving personal journeys make for engaging stories. They may offer a window into someone's style and values, yet they cannot tell you how a session will feel for you or what it will lead to.

Illustrative, Freshwater: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, strikes a large gong with a soft mallet beside a seated client in a green jumper.

Stories are not outcomes

A compelling training history speaks to a person's path, not to clinical results. For anyone choosing a session in Sydney, the more grounded question is what will actually happen in the room you are about to walk into.

What to ask about your own session

Before booking at the Lane Cove clinic, ask Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, which instruments she uses, what kind of experience the session is designed to offer and how it can be adapted. Sound sessions there are offered for relaxation and wellbeing. Knowing that up front helps set expectations that are realistic and kind to yourself.

You set the limits

Some workshops feature very loud gongs or require participants to lie on the floor for long stretches. You do not need to accept an intensity or position that feels uncomfortable simply because it appeared in someone else's class. Volume, distance from the instruments, a chair instead of a mat and the option to pause are all reasonable requests.

Paying attention to your nervous system

For people who startle easily, live with sound sensitivity or are feeling particularly frazzled, a softer, shorter format may feel more comfortable. Noticing how your body responds, and saying so, helps Christine shape the time around you.

A considered choice

There is no emotional response you are expected to have and no requirement to remain perfectly still. A session that matches your comfort and has clear expectations becomes a choice you have made thoughtfully, rather than a performance you are trying to get through. If something feels off during the session, you can tell Christine at any point.
