Moxibustion invites you to slow down and notice warmth, breath and comfort. A whole-person look at this traditional Chinese medicine practice, its theory and the precautions that matter.
There is something deeply calming about lying still while a gentle warmth builds over your abdomen and the faint scent of herbs fills the room. Moxibustion asks very little of you except to rest and notice. In our holistic practice in Lane Cove, we often see it as a mind–body ritual as much as a technique, an invitation to pause, breathe and reconnect with physical sensation.
Moxibustion warms points on the body using moxa, the dried leaf of the mugwort plant. The moxa is lit and allowed to smoulder, then held close to the skin or set on a protective base. Your practitioner watches closely and adjusts the distance so the warmth stays soothing.
In TCM theory, cold is described as something that contracts and slows the flow of qi, and this is said to show up physically and emotionally, as stiffness, sluggishness or a sense of being withdrawn. Moxa's warmth is traditionally used to bring movement and comfort back. Practitioners have applied it for:
Modern evidence on moxibustion is limited and mixed. We offer it as a traditional practice that may help some people feel more relaxed and grounded, as a complement to the care of a GP or specialist, who should assess any health concern first.
If you try moxibustion, you might use the time to breathe slowly into your belly, notice where warmth spreads and let thoughts pass without following them. Many people find this pairing of warmth and attention a restful experience.
Tradition suggests moxa mostly for people who tend to feel cold, digest slowly or carry stress in the body. Moxibustion is not recommended for people with diabetes or reduced feeling in the skin, because they may not register when the heat is too intense. Please also mention pregnancy, sensitive skin, asthma or smoke sensitivity to your practitioner.
