Recognising Yourself in a BPD Article: What to Do Next

7:39 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Familiar traits in an article about borderline personality disorder are not a diagnosis. Here is a calmer next step and how to ask about proper assessment.

Reading about borderline personality disorder can be unsettling when parts of the description sound familiar. Intense emotions, turbulent relationships and a deep fear of being left can all feature in such articles, and seeing your own experiences on the page may stir worry, relief or confusion all at once.

Recognition is not a diagnosis

Finding yourself in a list of traits does not mean you have a particular condition. Strong emotional reactions, relationship struggles and fear of rejection can arise for many different reasons, including past experiences, stress, other mental health conditions or simply a very difficult season of life. Only a proper assessment can begin to sort through those possibilities.

A gentler next step

If an article resonates, try writing down a few concrete examples: what happened, how you felt in your body and mind, and how it affected your day or your relationships. Specific moments are far more useful than a general sense of fitting a description.

Bringing it to a session

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, whose training includes psychotherapy qualifications, sees people for talking therapy at the Lane Cove clinic. Feel free to share your notes with her and ask openly if a specialised mental health assessment might help clarify things. Where that seems appropriate, she can talk with you about involving your GP, who can arrange a referral.

Support rather than a label

The aim is to find appropriate understanding and help, not to settle your identity from a checklist. No single label explains every struggle, and people are always more than a diagnosis. Psychotherapy can offer a space to explore your experiences with curiosity while the right assessment pathway is worked out.

Choosing the direction together

Within sessions, your priorities matter. You might want to understand what sets off intense reactions, how relationships feel from the inside, or how you would notice small changes. Ask Christine how the work will be reviewed along the way and what other help is available if your needs change.
