A little preparation makes a cupping appointment easier. Here is what to mention beforehand, what to say during the session and what to ask before you go.
A little preparation can turn a cupping appointment from a step into the unknown into something you feel ready for. Knowing what to mention beforehand, and what aftercare to expect, also leaves more room to relax once you are on the table.
Think about your skin and your calendar. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, asks about sensitive skin, any recent procedures such as cosmetic treatments or surgery, and reactions you have had to cupping or similar therapies in the past. It also helps to mention what the next few days hold. Marks can be visible for a while, so a wedding, a swimming carnival, a fitted outfit or a return to training may affect timing and placement.

Speak up as soon as you notice an uncomfortable pulling, a burning feeling, light-headedness or dizziness. Christine can adjust or stop at any point. Breathing slowly and letting your shoulders soften can make the experience easier, but comfort always comes first.

Ask which skin changes are normal for you and how to respond if anything seems unusual or uncomfortable later. A short, personal set of aftercare instructions is far more reliable than a collection of tips gathered from the internet.
Choose one ordinary activity, perhaps lifting a toddler, turning to reverse the car or sleeping on one side, and bring it back to the next appointment as a point of comparison. Add comfort and how your skin recovered to that discussion. Whether to continue depends on your original reason for coming, how you responded and the alternatives available, rather than on how the marks looked.
Many people like to plan a quieter evening after their appointment at the Lane Cove clinic, with water, a warm layer and an early night. Giving your body and mind some unhurried time is a simple, practical part of looking after yourself.
