The Mind–Body Link: Building a Positive Outlook

Thoughts, breath and body are closely connected. A whole-person look at how simple routines can nurture a more positive outlook, from Lane Cove Holistic Medicine.

Seeing the whole picture

A holistic approach starts from the idea that your mind and body are not separate compartments. How you sleep, move, eat and breathe influences how you feel, and the reverse is true as well. Positivity, from this angle, is less a matter of willpower and more the natural result of looking after the whole person.

Three layers of a positive day

The body: light and movement

Exposure to natural light in the morning helps many people feel more alert. Follow it with regular physical activity you enjoy, such as walking, cycling or yoga. People commonly report feeling lighter in mood after exercise, and staying active is part of general good health.

The breath: stillness and meditation

Slowing the breath for a few minutes is one of the most accessible mind–body practices. Meditation may help some people feel clearer and more at peace, and it needs nothing more than a quiet corner.

The mind: reflection and intention

Before the day begins, consider what you would like to achieve. In the evening, a journal gives your thoughts somewhere to land. Writing about things you appreciate can gently shift attention towards the positive.

Little comforts that connect the layers

A warm cup of herbal tea is a small example of how body and mind meet. The warmth, the aroma and the act of pausing all contribute to a calmer moment. Check with your GP before using herbal teas if you are pregnant, have a health condition or take medication.

A traditional perspective

In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, emotional and physical balance are considered inseparable, and acupuncture and herbal medicine are traditionally used with the whole person in mind. We share this as traditional theory, alongside modern medical care rather than in place of it.

What to expect

Many people find that caring for body, breath and mind together helps them feel more motivated and less overwhelmed. Results differ between individuals. If low mood or stress is affecting your life, please speak with your GP.
