Waves, waterfalls and open sky seem to quieten the mind. A whole-person look at why moving water appeals to so many people, including the popular theory of negative ions.
Ask people where they go to clear their head and many will name the beach, a river or a waterfall. The rhythm of waves, the smell of salt and the open horizon seem to invite the mind to slow down. From a whole-person perspective, that experience involves body, senses and emotions all at once, and there are several possible reasons it feels so good.
The steady sound of water is a soft, repetitive background that many people find soothing, and wide views give tired eyes a rest from screens.
Walking on sand or along a riverside track is gentle exercise, and being outside brings natural light, both of which most of us get too little of during a working week.
Moving water breaks into fine droplets that create negatively charged particles in the air. Levels are said to be highest beside surf and waterfalls, present wherever air is fresh, and much lower in polluted city streets. Some people believe these ions lift mood, reduce allergies or ease headaches. The research is mixed and many of these claims remain unproven, so negative ions are probably best seen as one possible piece of the picture rather than the full answer.
For people living and working around Lane Cove, a deliberate break from the city can be a valuable part of self-care. Try setting aside regular time, even an hour or two, to be near water without your phone. Notice your breath, the sounds around you and how your body feels.
USB ionisers and ionic light bulbs are marketed for desks, homes and workshops. There is little reliable evidence that they change how people feel, and some ionising devices produce ozone, which can irritate breathing. A walk outside is a simpler choice.
Time by the water can be a lovely way to rest and reconnect. It complements, rather than replaces, medical care, so please see your GP about allergies, headaches, low mood or any other health concern.
