One photo of a moxa stick does not describe every session. Learn how forms of moxa differ and why suitability matters more than looking traditional.
A photograph of a glowing moxa stick is the image most people associate with moxibustion. In practice, the mugwort material can be prepared in several ways, from compressed sticks to small cones and loose wool, and heat can be delivered close to the skin or at a distance. One picture does not describe every session.
Different preparations produce different amounts of smoke, scent and heat, and they are used in different ways. For someone with sensitive airways, a strong smell or a lot of smoke may be a real concern. For someone with delicate skin, the method of applying heat may matter more.
Ask Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, which form she is considering for you and why she has chosen it. Share any earlier bad experience with smoke or heat, including ones outside a clinic, such as near a campfire, incense or a heater. Those experiences can be just as relevant as reactions in a clinic setting.
It can be tempting to want the version that looks the most authentic or smells the most herbal. The more useful question is whether a particular application suits your body and circumstances right now. Traditional appearance is not a measure of what is right for you.
Before any warmth is applied, settle on how you will let Christine know if it becomes too much, and what care your skin might need afterwards. Sensation, skin condition and breathing sensitivity all belong in that discussion. Your instructions are shaped for you, so a routine found online or a friend's experience should not guide your own care.
For many visitors to the Lane Cove clinic, the gentle warmth and quiet of a moxibustion session offers a chance to pause in a busy week. If questions about tiredness, stress or sleep come up while you rest, you are welcome to raise them.
