Traditional theory describes when moxibustion may suit someone and when it may not. Feeling cold or tired alone is not enough to decide.
Moxibustion is often pictured as a cosy, warming ritual, ideal for anyone who feels chilly or worn out. Traditional Chinese medicine theory is more nuanced than that. It describes patterns where moxibustion is considered suitable and others where it may be unwise. A general sense of being cold or tired is simply not enough information to choose a heat treatment for yourself.
Fatigue can reflect poor sleep, a heavy workload, low mood, grief, iron deficiency, thyroid changes and many other causes. Feeling cold can have just as many explanations. From a whole-person perspective, these symptoms are invitations to look more closely, not shortcuts to a particular technique.
If tiredness or feeling cold is new, persistent or getting worse, see your GP so possible medical causes can be checked.
When you meet Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, in Lane Cove, share your symptoms and health history in as much detail as feels comfortable, including:
Ask whether moxibustion fits the assessment and what the alternatives might be. An individual decision should guide the session, rather than an assumption that a traditional warming method helps whenever energy dips.
If moxibustion is chosen, discuss how to signal discomfort and what aftercare to follow. Reduced sensation, skin sensitivity and breathing issues around smoke are all relevant. Instructions should be specific to you rather than copied from a video or a friend's routine.
Low energy often responds to changes in daily rhythm as much as to any single therapy. Gentle movement, regular meals and protected time for rest are worth exploring alongside your other care. Bring a week of notes about your energy to your next appointment to give the conversation a solid starting point.
