Any heat treatment calls for attention to the person receiving it. Here is what to mention before warming moxibustion, and why speaking up matters.
Warming moxibustion brings smouldering moxa close to the skin. Because it uses heat, the person receiving it is central to doing it safely. Preparation is about knowing what to report, how your skin will be checked and what to expect afterwards.
Before a session, let Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, know if any of these apply to you:
With that information, Christine can adapt the technique or suggest a different option at the Lane Cove clinic.
A comfortable plan includes permission to say something straight away if the warmth becomes too strong. You do not need to wait for the session to finish, and there is no virtue in enduring excessive heat. Agree on a simple word or gesture beforehand so you feel confident using it.
Some people find that anxiety makes them reluctant to interrupt. If that sounds familiar, mention it. Knowing that your signal will be welcomed can make relaxing much easier.
Ask what aftercare to follow, including how to look after the skin and what kind of reaction would warrant a call. If anything differs from what was explained, contact the clinic for advice rather than waiting it out.
Keep your instructions specific to you. Routines shared online or a friend's experience cannot account for your skin, health and circumstances.
Feeling heard before a treatment often helps the body settle. Take a few minutes at the start of your appointment to run through these points, and you may find the warmth easier to enjoy once the session is under way.
